I really love cafes located within heartland towns. Not only do I get a thrill from trying hard to locate them, but there's also just this peaceful and chill vibe that they never fail to bring.
Foxhole Cafe has recently opened in Hougang at The Midtown Residences (formerly Hougang Plaza) and is only about a 5+ min walk from the Hougang station and Hougang central area. It might be slightly challenging trying to locate the cafe as the mall hasn't actually fully opened yet, so it's easy for you to miss the really quiet building.
Foxhole is one of the few tenants who have already moved in and opened to the public.
The cafe is actually an extension of The Pourover Bar (yes, they've moved to Hougang!) so you'll see all the Pourover coffee here. The cafe is 2-Story, with The Pourover Bar occupying the first floor and the rest of the cafe and seating up on the second floor.
Right at the very (tiny) entrance of the cafe, you'll see their pastry and dessert counter. There currently isn't much of a selection, but with time I'm sure they'll be expanding their menu!
The cafe is generally really well and neatly decorated. On the second floor, you'll see a huge unicorn mural painting on the wall right next to the glass window, as well as a very nice view of the Hougang Town. From this photo you can see that the cafe faces a really huge green field.
It's this sense of quiet heartland nature the cafe brings that I really appreciate, definitely not something you get to enjoy at those cafes in town. Hopefully Foxhole will be able to maintain its tranquil vibe as more tenants move into the new mall.
Foxhole cafe doesn't have an actual mains menu like other cafes do, so their menu may seem slightly limited in terms of the food options.
Despite that, the cafe has been especially popular among cafe-goers since its opening end of last year because of this ONE particular dish that has been literally getting all the hype:
//SIGNATURE CHILLI CRAB CROISSANT with RASPBERRY CHIPS// $14.90
When I first heard about this unique croissant I was thinking.. "Chilli Crab Croissant? Like that also can??" I decided to head over and try it for myself!
To be honest, I was genuinely impressed with the quality of the croissant! The croissant was fragrant and flaky, and the soft chilli crab fillings, mixed with egg mayo, were generous in amount and mildly spicy with a nice hint of sweetness. Hands down the most interesting croissant I've ever tried! The raspberry chips that came alongside the croissant also went perfectly well to suit the chilli crab taste of the dish.
A must-try at Foxhole cafe? Definitely.
The cafe does serve other sweet desserts as well, not exactly an extensive menu, but sufficient for you to be able to pick out an afternoon snack of your choice. The cafe's popular pick would be the Buttercream Strawberry Orange Cake ($6.90). Top that with a nice Flat White Coffee ($4.90) from the Pourover Bar downstairs and there you have a perfect afternoon tea time!
Overall, I enjoyed my trip to the well tucked away Foxhole Cafe for a good relaxing afternoon tea. Their menu (and seating) is very limited though, so it may be difficult for them to attract large meal-time crowds. Also, I would consider their bites/snacks as pretty pricey considering they aren't exactly proper mains.
Nonetheless, the Chilli Crab Croissant is a definite must-try, along with some good and affordable Pourover coffee!
