17 PLACES TO EAT ALONG UPPER THOMSON ROAD
Thursday, December 15, 2016
Just a little compilation of what's good to eat here, my recommendations.....
Upper Thomson Road is well known for the vast number and variety of eateries, cafes, and restaurants. Quite a number of these places open till late at night, making this street a popular hot spot for late night suppers since it is also conveniently located at the centre of Singapore.
One will always be spoilt for choice when deciding where to eat along Upp Thomson Road because there is just too much good food on this street (but it's a very very long street haha).
I've compiled a short list of places that are worth the visit, out of the million and one choices you have, but do note that there are many other amazing cafes and eateries along the stretch not covered in this post. Also, I will be constantly updating this page upon my future visits to these places.
1. Ban Leong Wah Hoe Seafood
There's really a lot of good food around Casuarina! Ban Leong Wah Hoe is a big seafood/zichar restaurant located at the end (corner unit) of the food stretch along the small Casuarina road. Most people know about Casuarina Curry but the next time you're there you should check out this really good restaurant. They're especially famous for their seafood meesua as featured in the photo above!

It's all about the curry! Casuarina has long been famous for their prata and to be honest, their standards been kept all these years. They have a huge menu for their prata, and other popular dishes include their Murtabak, Briyani, and Curry Fish Head!

3. Fatboy's The Burger Bar
Every once in awhile you need to satisfy that burger craving, and Fatboy's rarely disappoints! What's special at this burger bar is that you get to build your very own burger by choosing from a list of buns, patties, ingredients and sauces! If you're lazy to do all that just choose from their long list of speciality burgers, and be sure to try their milkshake as well!

6. Meng's Kitchen
Maybe it's the vinegar-taste, or the generous amounts of ingredients added, or the chilli.....whatever it is, Meng's is personally my all-time favourite Bak Chor Mee eatery! Tastiest BCM, really affordable ($4.50), plus they open till late at night! They serve many other dishes like fishball noodles and deep-fried wanton, but let's be honest, people come here for the BCM!! Simply the best.

7. Nam Kee Chicken Rice and Restaurant
I remember the first time I wanted to try out the chicken rice at this place, they told me that they ran out of chicken and if I was okay with ordering other dishes instead. I was like "Wait, what?! chicken rice shop run out of chicken??" Plus it was only 8plus in the evening..... Well, when I finally got to try out their chicken rice, along with the other dishes, this place's popularity was indeed justified!!! The chicken rice here is good.

10. One Man Coffee
One Man Coffee is a really small cafe squeezed into the food stretch of Upp Thomson. Yeah, maybe that's why it's called One Man Coffee.....
The cafe has an all day brunch menu which includes their very popular 'Gashouse egg with bacon jam'. Do also try their 'Brioche French Toast (served with Caramelised banana, Salted caramel, and fresh cream with a scoop of ice cream)', mm sounds good!!

11. Pacamara Boutique Coffee Roasters
Pacamara Roasters is a 2 year old cafe that sits at the corner where Liquid Kitchen used to be along Upper Thomson Road. It is a revamp of the former OZ Speciality Coffee and now boasts a really nice and classy white-themed cafe with an expanded menu. Other than their well-known coffee, they serve food from both their extensive day as well as dinner menu, along with a whole range of drinks and desserts.

Nearest Mrt Station: Marymount
Open Daily 9am-11pm
12. Rochor Beancurd House
Tauhuay never goes wrong! I really love how Upp Thomson has almost everything local you could possibly be craving for. My typical template supper (or maybe dinner since this is going to sound like quite a lot to most people) with friends would include Prata, followed by some good Meng's Bakchormee, and then ending it off with some nice cold Rochor Tauhuay beancurd I'd order both the drink and dessert(+Youtiao and maybe some egg tarts).
Perfect!

13. The Roti Prata House
This place is easily the most famous and popular prata place along the entire Upp Thomson Road stretch (perhaps even in the entire sg?? haha maybe can compete..). At anytime of the day the shop will be filled with people and it's always so difficult to find a table. My favourite pratas here include egg prata, banana prata, and BOMB prata. Yes bomb prata is always the bomb! Other great dishes include their mee and maggi goreng, as well as milo dinosaur. Yes, Milo dinosaur is always a good idea (you'll be surprised though, some other places and drink stalls can't even serve proper milo dinosaur).
On a side note, the plain prata here tends to be disappointing at times, so if you're contemplating, just whack the egg prata. The more eggs the merrier.

Phone: 6459 5260
Open Daily 7am-2am (4am on Fri and Sat)
14. Salted Caramel
A very popular ice-cream place along the food stretch, usually very crowded at night and on weekends. I have to say though, that the ice cream here is good and I still prefer Salted Caramel to Udders or even Ice Cream Chef (further up Upp Thomson Rd). Their waffles are good, so best combi here would be waffles with Salted Caramel ice cream!

Nearest Mrt Station: Marymount
Phone: 6753 1718
Open Daily 12pm-11pm (2am on Fri and Sat)
15. Springleaf Prata Place
Springleaf Prata Place has come a long way from humble beginnings. They now have a total of 3 outlets in Singapore, the other 2 being located at Upp Bt Timah and East Coast. Springleaf Prata has been gaining much popularity over recent years simply because they serve quality prata. Other than prata, their murtabak is also highly popular among customers. What's special about this prata place is that they are always exploring new ways to revamp their menu every so often, coming up with special dishes such as the 'Ultimate Murtabak' and the 'Murtaburger'. If you love prata, you should head down here!
The original Springleaf Prata Place is located at the far ends of Upp Thomson (really upper upper area of upper Thomson) at Thong Soon/Springleaf estates. Good news is that there will be a station (Thomson Line- Springleaf station) right at the doorstep come 2020!

16. Windowsill Pies
One of the latest additions to the Upp Thomson food stretch include Windowsill Pies, a really nice and small cafe hidden at the corner of Soo Chow Walk behind the prominent UOB Bank. I really like this place because they have so many interesting flavours of dessert pies. (Warning)They are really sweet though, so only those with a sweet tooth will appreciate all that sugar...haha. I mean, desserts are meant to be sweet no??
Their popular flavour includes the 'Grasshopper'- Mint Dark Chocolate (featured in photo), along with other interesting flavours such as Coconut Lime Vodka, Rum and Apple, Honey Macadamia, and Smores! Each pie costs $7, and I believe they're perfect if you're looking to get some dessert for a party cause these pies are both sweet and very presentable.

17. Wong Chiew Eating House (Mandai)
The end of Upp Thomson Road meets Sembawang Road, beginning the journey to the North of Singapore. Many may not be familiar with this area unless you stay around the area or your army camp's close by.
Wong Chiew Eating House is a Hong Kong fusion restaurant owned by a Hong Kong family. Originally serving HK food such as dim sum and roast dishes, they now serve popular local flavours such as Salted Egg dishes! Other popular dishes include their Beef Kuay Teow and Wanton Noodles. The next time you're headed to the zoo or exploring the reservoirs, do make a short trip down to this HK eatery for a good lunch! If not for lunch, don't worry, they're open 24 hours a day all 7 days of the week!
Address: 29 Sembawang Rd, 779081

Buses Available: 167,169,980

Exploring all the good food along Upper Thomson never really ends. Many may beg to differ but I'd still consider this stretch the ultimate food haven of Singapore with a perfect mix of local food, hawkers, cafes, restaurants, bakeries and bars.
Hope you had a good read and discovered somewhere new to try out over the weekend! I'll continue to update this space so as always, stay tuned!
Cheers!
