RELIVE YOUR CHILDHOOD AT: OLD SCHOOL DELIGHTS (Feat. Insanely Good Banana Cake)

Friday, December 30, 2016

Old School Delights (OSD) is a really cool retro classroom-themed cafe and has always been one of my favourite hang out spots along Upper Thomson Road. Other than having what I believe to be the best banana cake around, the retro cafe simply echoes nostalgia as it is filled with games, toys, furniture and sights from your primary school classroom in the 90s and before. They also pride themselves in serving authentic homemade local delights and desserts.

OSD Notebook Menu

Menu written all over chalkboards on the walls

Over at the counter area, they have shelves of retro toys that you/your parents will probably find really familiar. Most of the games and toys are also actually for sale at the cafe.

Marbles/ Country Eraser Flags/ Enid Blyton Books

More vintage stuff

Old-School snacks! Bet they're all looking really familiar!

Each table also has a really classic box of games for you and your friends to play while waiting for the food! Make sure you order first before playing the games!

Wooden box on each table consists of Eraser Flags, a pack of Donkey card game, Snakes and Ladders, 5-Stones

Anyone remembers playing this in primary school?

Food wise, OSD serves really affordable and tasty homemade-style authentic local delicacies, desserts, and drinks. Some of their popular signature dishes include their Mee Siam, Curry Chicken, and Kueh Pie Tee. Although OSD isn't halal certified, they do not use pork or lard.

//MILO DINOSAUR// $3

My all-time favourite local drink! No local meal is complete without a Milo Dinosaur! (Yes with the dinosaur)

//KUEH PIE TEE// $6.50 (6 pieces)

A classic Nonya favourite consisting of crisp shells filled with braised turnip and topped with egg bits, parsley, and homemade chilli sauce.

Out of all the starters on the menu, this is the Must-Try!!
I really love good Kueh Pie Tee, and this definitely was good Kueh Pie Tee.

//OLD SCHOOL HERITAGE MEE SIAM// $5.80

This is OSD's ultimate signature dish, a must try for mee siam lovers! Their 30-year old recipe comprises of a secret blend of 12 fresh grounded spices.

//HAINANESE CHICKEN CUTLET// $9.80

Crispy full-flavoured chicken chunks smothered with homemade sweet sour sauce

I personally thought that the rice was a little dry and blend but at least the really tasty fried chicken cutlet made up for it!

Other Food dishes to order:

-OSD Signature Pulut
-Homestyle Curry Chicken
-Nasi Bryani

They also have a weekend special classic set of Beef Spaghetti with 3 pieces of tuck shop wings for $12.80!

Now on to the CAKE!

OSD has a range of homemade cakes that are insanely good! Clearly underrated!
I've been here quite a few times and really enjoyed their fresh, soft-textured, and extremely rich cakes every single time (without fail).

What to try?

OSD Signature Butter Cake
Sticky Chewy Chocolate Fudge
Chocolate Banana Fudge Cake**
OSD Special Steamed Banana Cake**

**legit good! I promise!! I haven't tried such good and soft banana cake anywhere else.

//CHOCOLATE BANANA FUDGE CAKE// $6.20

Fresh mashed bananas infused into a double layered banana cake, slathered with chocolate fudge goodness!

If you can't decide between sticky chewy chocolate fudge and the steamed banana cake, just go for this! It's literally a fusion between the other 2 cakes and it tastes HEAVENLY. I'm not even exaggerating. Better still, all the cakes here are made so affordable (compared to elsewhere). A pity many people don't know of this place.

A really nostalgic and delightful experience at Old School Delights with great food, nostalgic games and a classic vintage ambience! A great place to visit with friends and family indeed!
