[DESSERT HUNTING] JAPANESE-FRENCH PASTRIES: A FLOR PATISSERIE REVIEW

Saturday, December 31, 2016

The entire area around Outram, from Neil Road to Duxton Hill, is lined with countless number of cafes, restaurants and eateries. If you wanna go cafe hopping, a great place to drop by would definitely by Flor Patisserie.

Flor Patisserie, famous for their Japanese-styled French pastries, has been around for quite a number of years now, satisfying the dessert lovers of Singapore. Started by highly-experieneced Chef Yamashita in 2010 at the original outlet along Duxton Hill, Flor has now expanded new outlets at Takashimaya, Siglap, and Funan mall.

Flor has a whole range of cakes, pastries, and cookies, and what makes them so special is that they are all baked without baking powder, artificial rising agent, stabiliser, or preservative. The soft and moist quality of their cakes are achieved by natural aeration of eggs whipped to their full peak.
Their confections largely feature fresh fruits and are lighter in flavour than the conventional French pastries, making them really delightful and satisfying!

They have quite a wide selection of cakes and pastries and sell them in either slices or whole cakes. A lot of them are pretty popular, most notably their best-seller cheese tarts ($3.80), strawberry soufflé ($7.50), and mango pie ($7.20). Today I decided to give their mango pie and green tea roll a try!

//MANGO PIE// $7.20

Seasonal fresh mangoes piled high on a base of a dense almond butter cake baked in puff pastry.

Honestly, I wasn't expecting much when I ordered this mango pie. I generally like mango and mango desserts so I decided to give this a try.
The first thing that came to mind was that the mango was really fresh and surprisingly sweet! I really don't like it when desserts have mediocre or sub-standard quality of fruits, so this was really refreshing.
The rest of the pastry including the cake was really delicious as well and I'm sure to be back for more of this goodness!

Dessert Rating: 8/10

//WAKAKUSAYMA// $8

Swiss roll of honey-infused green tea sponge and red bean cream, topped with strands of kyoto-uji green tea cream

The roll was rather delightful, not the best I've tried but decent. The roll is also considerably bigger than typical sized ones, hence it's on the pricier side.

Dessert Rating: 7/10

Flor Patisserie can easily be the go-to dessert place for people who work around the CBD with outlets  at Duxton as well as Funan. Their lovely cakes and pastries will surely be hot favourites for awhile and I'm already looking forward to my next visit there to try out their other flavours!
