MONTANA SINGAPORE: PERFECT CHILL-OUT FOR WAFFLES AND COFFEE

Tuesday, January 03, 2017

Where to eat good waffles around town? There's no doubt Montana's got to make that list for cafes in Singapore that serve the best and also the most interesting waffles around!

Montana Singapore, located at Level 2 of POMO along Selegie Road, is now about a year old and is a major revamp of the former Montana Brew Coffee. The rebranded Montana now serves a much wider range of food including brunch dishes, mains such as pasta and burgers, savoury and dessert waffles, as well as their speciality coffees. Their menu includes food from their sister cafes South Bronx (burgers) and Fabulous Dough (dessert) which are also located at POMO, so this is your all-in-one cafe!

Burgers at Montana are from South Bronx which is located at the first floor of POMO just downstairs. South Bronx serves a much wider range of burgers to include even dessert ice-cream burgers so you might want to check out South Bronx as well!

At Montana, we got to try their Five Spice Pulled Pork Burger:

//FIVE SPICE PULLED PORK BURGER// $16.80

Char siew sauce, choya pickled daikon, Japanese mayo, served with thick cut fries

I have to say that the burger menu didn't really impress me as much as the other food here. I guess you could say I didn't try their signature burger The Bronx for a better judgement but well I found this particular burger rather ordinary, nothing spectacular.

Now on to the Waffles! Which is what Montana is well known for.
I was firstly impressed with the range of waffles to choose from, especially for the savoury waffles.
You get to choose from a variety of really interesting flavours and combinations such as

Truffle Scrambled Eggs on waffle
Southern Fried Chicken waffle
Mac & Cheese Waffle
and even Assam Crab Waffle

Really unique I must say!

Due to stomach constraints we went for the Mac & Cheese waffle which was also labelled as "The Waffle That Started It All", a Montana favourite.

//SIGNAURE MAC & CHEESE WAFFLE// $13.80

a.k.a The Waffle That Started It All
Jalapeno, Truffle Oil, Mac & Cheese within the waffle, served with curried tomato relish on the side

At first sight, I thought that this waffle looked really ordinary for a signature waffle. What so special about it? Where's my Mac & Cheese?
My friend took a bite and started declaring it's goodness so I had to grab a bite as well! True enough, it tasted really really special. The ingredients were all INSIDE the waffle and it was really tasty. In fact, it tasted a subtle mix of sweet and savoury which was what I really appreciated. For its price, I have to say that the Mac & Cheese Waffle is a must-try if you're looking for a really unique and good savoury waffle.

//RED VELVET WAFFLE// $14.50

Red velvet waffle stack, strawberry shortcake ice cream, white chocolate rose syrup

Now comes the moment where I can't decide whether I enjoyed the Mac & Cheese or the Red Velvet Waffle more.

The Red Velvet Waffle Stack is what I consider a true dessert. Fragrant and crisp waffle, rich and creamy ice cream, and that tingling yet satisfying sauce.

I particularly appreciated their use of the white chocolate rose syrup sauce. It was a really unique choice of topping and it went perfectly well with the waffle and ice cream flavours. The ice cream was also richer than normal and the chunks of shortcake where huge, reminding me of those tasty digestive biscuits (won't be surprised if they actually used them).

I reckon their other waffles taste just as good as well with other popular flavours such as the Black Velvet Waffle (Black Sesame).

For the other waffles, you're allowed to choose between Fluffy or Crispy texture.

Coconut Cold Brew:

Montana is also proud to present to coffee drinkers the world's first ever coconut brew. Their speciality coffee is brewed by steeping ground coffee in coconut water to create a unique and sightly sweet taste. Feeling adventurous? Ditch the regular coffee menu and give this a try!

You can choose from four different flavours of coconut cold brew:

Regular, Gula Melaka, Yuzu, Kahlua

//REGULAR COCONUT COLD BREW// $6.80

Coconut Cold Brew served with coconut ice sphere. Light sweetness with hint of coconut and a smooth soft finish

I found the drink equally as interesting as most of their other food on the menu, and it was refreshing indeed! I rarely drink coffee to appreciate its taste, but this coffee was some good coffee! Good to try even if you're not a coffee drinker since it's not too bitter.
